Hoof Care: My Pedicure Secret
Confession time: I like my toes to look pretty but I don’t take care of them.
I rely on a good friend to tell me when it is time for me to get my “hooves” shaped, filed, and polished.
At first, thinking I knew what I was doing, I recommended a spa-like nail salon for us to meet at. They poured herbal tea, offered us the “special” spa pedicure and a nice comfy chair.
Well… after we discovered that our “special” treatment meant a few lemon slices thrown into the foot bath and chairs that were anything but comfy we were more than a little miffed when both our pedicures chipped after only one week. My friend suggested next time we try her nail salon. I quickly agreed.
Smaller in size, but still very cute and swank, the new salon promised the area’s “BEST PEDICURE” as voted by such and such and such and such. Hmmm….interesting… AND it was going to be cheaper.
Huh?!
I was skeptical to say the least. But we sat down, had a nice chat, and in the end my toes looked shiny and pretty and I went about my week.
THREE weeks later I realized my toes were still almost perfect! No chipping, no peeling. I actually still looked like I had a pedicure and my little piggies did not resemble those of a little girl who had clumsily borrowed her mom’s toenail polish.
Hmm… Interesting…
So we went back. Same thing, three weeks later my polish was still perfect.
And then we went back again… Each time my pedicure lasted until the next visit.
Of course while I was there, I was too busy gabbing and commiserating with my friend to pay attention to what, if anything, these toenail magicians were doing.
This last time I paid attention…
Right before Sue stood up to go attend to the set of toes she took out a small vial from her pocket. As she started to put it on my bright pink toes I asked her:
Hmm.. Sue, what is that stuff?
Oh this? This is top coat.
Can I see it please?
Sure.
And this is what it was:
I’m not making this up. HOOF LACQUER!
At first, I was a little offended. I mean this product is for HORSES HOOVES!
But then I realized how genius this stuff is and I quickly got over it.
Here’s what it says on the bottle:
Healthy Hoof Lacquer is the “secret” horse trainers use on prized show and race horses. Ultra shiny, satin finish and a strong UV protection for nails
This stuff is AMAZING. Seriously, my toenails don’t chip.
So I looked it up.. guess how much it costs? A 0.5 ounce bottle costs only $3.14 on Amazon! You can buy it here.
You’re welcome. Shhh… don’t tell anyone.

Just think, you can use it with Mane & Tail, which are also excellent products all fillies should know about! LOL
am hearing good things about these products. I may have to try…
As long you aren’t using bag balm, I’ll still be your buddy. I need a pedicure super duper badly. Sigh. Thanks for reminding me that my feet look like Bigfoot’s.
Ummm. I DID use bag balm. But that was a really REALLY really long time ago. I swear. Now go on Sasquatsch get those talons taken care of!
My father has been using “Mane ‘N Tail” shampoo for years. I am not making this up. He swears by it.
OK you are the second recco for this stuff. Must investigate… Can you please ask your Dad if he has experienced any side-effects? And please leave out any rated-R comments.
I just read your post, clicked on the link and bought it! =)
So funny that shipping is same price as product… but still cheap! Thanks, Sara!
I know. I was bummed about that too. I do the PRIME shipping membership and was not happy when I saw that it did not qualify for the free shipping deal. But I think it’s still a steal. Let me know how you think it works.
Laughing though it is worth considering. I think it is funny that when scrolling over the picture, it offers “used” as an option.
Sketchy to say the least. I’m still buying it though. Not used. New.
That is hilarious and also, pretty genius. I have never gotten a pedicure before. In fact, I’m a little scared to ask for one because my toes have this awesome quality of sprouting callouses and I’m all sorts of self-conscious about them.
I have used the Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioners before, though and I agree with what Janelle said, they are excellent products! It keeps my hair all sorts of shiny and looking amazing!
OK again with the Mane & Tail recommendation. Now I’m totally curious. And you should definitely get a pedicure, trust me whatever your feet look like they’ve seen worse. I guarantee it. It’s worth it for the 4 minutes of foot massage. Makes lots of noises when they do it: Like oooh,, and aaaahhh. you’ll squeeze a couple of extra minutes out of them I promise!
can I put this on my finger nails too?
I’m too much of a clutz to pay for my fingernails to be done. And I’m not impatient to wait for them to dry so I never spring for it. But yes, it should work for your finger nails as well as your toe nails.
Now I’m off to buy this Mane n’ Tail stuff? Hope I don’t start whinning. BTW that’s not #winning.
Love this post! I grew up showing horses and I am pretty sure we used something like this but never thought about it since! How about your fingernails? Does it work for that? I have more issues with chipping fingernails so I never have a manicure because the next day they will be chipped. I am going to try it!
See above. I don’t get my nails done because I’m too impatient. Let me know how it works for you. I really do think it works on my toes.
