Follow Your Passion: Goodbye Steve Jobs

by Sara on October 5, 2011

The world lost a visionary today, Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs and my mom believed in the same thing: Love what you do.

One of the last lessons my mom ever shared with me was: find your passion and follow it. No matter what.

I’m still working on it.

Please take a moment to watch this commencement speech that Jobs gave to Stanford in 2005 – in it he tells three very poignant stories about his life.

Then live by his words which echo my mom’s:

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

He’s someone who contributed a tremendous amount of vision and passion to this world and will be missed.  As a major Mac user and fan I’m sad that cancer took him too early.

I’m grateful for his reminder to heed my mom’s advice to love what you do, he also taught me a new one:

“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”

Thank you Steve Jobs.

I just loved his perspective. How beautiful that it was a reminder of your mom’s words to you. Great advice – I believe it too.
